Finding Sanctuary 101 Course

Finding Sanctuary 101 is a 10 week, virtual, live, course that will give you an overview of how to start and run a sanctuary, with 2 extra classes reserved for when your dream is up and running. 

This course is run by Ellie Laks and Jay Weiner, Founders of The Gentle Barn, animal rescuers, healers, trainers, business leaders, and experts in running a 25-year-old national sanctuary. 

If you have always dreamed of starting a sanctuary, but don't know how to get started, and are wondering what you will need to have, do and know, this is the course for you. This course will help you decide if a sanctuary is for you, and supply you with all the information needed to start. 

Once you have completed this course, there are additional deep dive courses you can take with Ellie and Jay, to further your process.

The course includes:

 -Spiritual logistics

This class will help you visualize and manifest your specific vision and dreams. There are a million ways that a sanctuary can be like, with many different options of the animals that you rescue, the property that you are on, and the things that you do there. The first step is to figure out what dream is coming through you, what it looks like, and exactly what it is. We will help you prepare spiritually for this journey.

 -Physical logistics part 1

This class will help you set up a nonprofit organization and understand all the logistics you will have to deal with as you do it.

 -Physical logistics part 2

This class will prepare you for hiring and training staff, volunteers, and choosing and working with veterinarians and practitioners.

 -Rescuing animals

This class will cover all the many different ways you can rescue animals, including undercover investigations, slaughterhouses, BLM, shelters, and working with other rescues.

 -Rehabilitating animals

This class will cover the many different ways to care for, feed, and rehabilitate animals, no matter what age or phase they are in, from orphans, newborns, sick animals, and elders.

 -Helping animals transition

Our work in a sanctuary is not just to give our animals the best life possible but knowing when and how to help animals transition. We will discuss how to do it so the animal can go home with dignity.

 -Community

This class will help you learn the many different ways there are to work with the community alongside your animals, and help you set up how you would like to be a part of your community.

 -Development

This class will talk about the fundraising, marketing, social media, and public relationship side of a sanctuary.

 -Compassion fatigue

There will be times that doing this work will bring you to your knees. This class will help you identify compassion fatigue, get you through it, and help you get back up on your feet and keep going.

 -Veganism

The more people who are vegan, the less animals have to suffer. Each person who goes vegan, saves 200 animals each year. By creating more vegans, you are saving more animals. This class will teach you how to inspire others to go vegan and stay healthy, from most commonly asked questions, to dealing with hostility and resistance. 

The last two classes will be reserved for when your sanctuary is actually up and running and have real life questions about your organization, your animals, and your day to day challenges.
